King County Assessor’s Office Responsibilities

The King County Assessor’s Office is responsible for appraising land and buildings for tax purposes.

The King County Assessor’s Office uses three methods when doing property valuation. They include the following:

  1. The market value

It is the value the property would sell for in the King County area compared to similar ones.

  1. Revenue value

The King County property’s value is based on its revenue-generating potential in this method.

  1. Replacement value

The King County property’s value is reached by calculating how much it would cost to restore a structure.

The property value in King County County is one of the lowest in Washington State. The King County county’s tax rate is at 1, but the amount of tax paid is on the lower side.

If you disagree with the value the King County Assessor’s Office came up with, you can appeal to the King County Board of Equalization. The following groups of people or organizations are exempted from paying tax on their properties:

  • King County senior citizens that are above the age of 61
  • Persons with disability in King County County
  • The King County disabled that have had to retire from work because of their condition, including veterans
  • King County Non-profit organizations
  • King County Churches
  • Government-owned
  • A household that has earned less than $35479 in that year

The properties go through the King County County Department of Revenue for approval to be on the list.

The money collected as property tax goes into King County’s County fire department, recreational King County areas, King County public schools, and King County libraries.
